Mall Hopping

With parents and old friends coming to town, I went out entertaining people most of the time during this holiday break. And guess where we go? The malls. Where else could we Jakartans go? And guess why Jakarta’s streets seem so deserted? Its because those who are in town are in the malls. These places are literally swamped with people, I get so drained from simply being immersed in the wasted energy. Traffic aside, where else could one walk around in Jakarta without being devoured by its pollution, heat and humidity?

i always thought air-conditioning air conditioning cultures are somehow perverse. basically you need air conditioning 24/7 all year round because you can't stand your own environment.

surely bonkers.

having said that, living in heated buildings never seemed perverse. - altho we walk outside, and only need heating thru winter...

I think the problem with air-cons are the environmental problem caused by them. Haven't heard such issues caused by heaters.

well heaters also burn up carbon in some way or other.

but being interested in spaces, don't you wonder, that so many of your fellow Jakartans choose air conditioned spaces over the "natural" outdoors...

is it any wonder Jakarta is so polluted - pollution doesn't matter to those who can afford purified cool air 24/7...

I think the choice over air-conditioned spaces is not specific for Jakartans.

Many people, given the choice and affordability, would probably opt for air-cons. Only those who love being in nature and/or are environmentally conscious would choose naturally ventilated spaces.

Unfortunately in Jakarta, even those who love being in nature and/or are environmentally conscious would probably choose air-cons, as the alternative would be to breathe the polluted air.

And more areas in the world need air cons over heaters. With direct problem caused by air-cons to the ozone layer, the use of air-cons has arguably more effect than heaters.
